8 Movies To Watch Before School Starts

It’s hard to believe that we only have a few days left in August, September is slowly creeping in, and fall is almost falling in our lives. With that said, going back to school is about to hit everyone’s calendars (if it hasn’t already) and weekdays and nights are to be filled with homework and after school activities.

So if you’re looking for some time to connect with your fam or just to sit back and get lost in the movie world for just a bit, I’ve got you covered. Here are 8 movies that you may have missed this summer that everyone is talking about as you prepare for another school year to begin.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie
The bros are BACK! The childhood memories that Mario and Luigi have given you are coming to life in our favorite animated family movie of the summer. Through this bestie’s journey through Mushroom Kingdom, we find your favorite characters like Toad and Princess Peach armed and ready to take down the ultimate villain, Bowser. This movie was a 10/10 in my book and I'm sure it will level up your movie night!

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken
This one is for the high school kid that is shy, a little awkward, and is ready to find out what makes them stand out from the others. You’ll find characters voiced by Lana Condor, Toni Collette, Jane Fonda, and Annie Murphy, so you know that there’s going to be something for everyone in this animated comedy. And ps, the ocean is a mysterious world, but there’s something spectacular hidden within the waves!

Shazam! Fury Of The Gods
The story of Billy Batson continues in the sequel to Shazam! that came out in 2019. This time, we enter the world where Billy is transformed into his superhero alter ego to take on the ultimate battle for superpowers and the fate of the world. I don't know about you, but that sounds ominous, but there’s nothing that Shazam! and his superhero team can’t take on! If you’re looking to escape to a magical world, then this movie is it.

The Flash
If you’re in the mood for time traveling, possible future altering, and overall exhilarating movie, then The Flash is EXACTLY what you need. You know the story of The Flash, but if you need a quick recap, Barry got struck by lightning and with his now super speed ability, it’s his duty to save the world. Oh and if you aren’t convinced yet, Michael Keaton makes a return as Batman. You’re welcome.

John Wick: Chapter 4
Your favorite assassin is back with a mission and facing an enemy that is bigger than us all. This movie is the fourth installment in the John Wick franchise and is bringing back actors like Laurence Fishburne (Bowery King), Lance Reddick (Charon), and Ian McShane (Winston). With a John Wick movie night, you’re in for an action packed thrilling night!

Renfield
If you didn’t have Nicolas Cage as Dracula on your 2023 bingo card, well you do now. Nicholas Hoult stars as Renfield aka Dracula’s tortured aid that is looking to branch out on his own and get out of the shadow of ‘The Prince of Darkness’. This movie has everything that you need - a toxic relationship coming to an end, some laughable horror, and Nic Cage levitating while being absolutely unhinged.

Top Gun: Maverick
Well hello there, Aviators. Take flight with one of the most exhilarating action packed movie that you can imagine. Tom Cruise and Miles Teller are pushing the envelope in missions that will change their lives forever. Now, this movie has been out since May 2022 so if you haven't watched it yet, you are truly doing yourself a disservice. And for the ones that are watching Top Gun: Maverick once again, welcome back.

Fast X
Rounding out the list of the top eight movies to watch is no other than the next installment in the iconic racing franchise, Fast & Furious. This time, Dom (Vin Diesel) is out to take down the son of a Brazil kingpin aka Dante aka Jason Momoa. And you know there’s ought to be new alliances formed, old enemies coming back, and above all, family.
