Childhood Toys Are Taking Over Hollywood
Remember when you were young and thought that your toys were coming alive when you were sleeping? Well, Hollywood has some news for you as they’ve been taking your cherished childhood toys and giving them a new spotlight. As they say, everything old is new again, and this could not be more true with 6 movies showcasing our love for everything found in the bottom of the toybox.
Barbie
First we start with the most anticipated movie of the summer. The Barbie Movie is taking over the world with a marketing campaign filled with iconic looks, an epic soundtrack and everything pink. The cast includes Margot Robbie as your favorite doll, Simu Liu & Ryan Gosling as Ken, and Will Farrell is the Mattel CEO. This long awaited movie is in theaters July 21st, and believe me when I say you DON’T want to miss this. #UltimateKENergyIncoming
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
The Turtle brothers are back together and are looking to take down an army of mutants. In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem - coming to theaters on August 2nd - these heroes put down the pizza and grab their swords to ensure that NYC stays safe on their watch. And knowing that the forever kid, Seth Rogan, is a writer on this movie, you are 100% in for one comedic and epic ride.
Transformers
Transformers have been a part of everyone’s childhood since the 80s and have launched the imagination and excitement of kids everywhere. These robots have been alive since the first live action installment hit theaters in 2007 and have been evolving and saving the world with every villain that comes their way. The 7th movie in this series - Transformers: Rise of the Beasts unleashed their power on July 9th, 2023 and starred actors like Anthony Ramos, Pete Davidson, and Dominique Fishback. Be prepared to have your mind blown when you experience this band of heroes.
Trolls
If you’re looking for a hair-raising adventure, then look no further. These iconic toys were introduced in the 1950s with their popularity surging in the 60s, 70s, and 90s! But don’t worry, we didn't forget about them in 2016 when the first movie, titled Trolls (because duh), swept the movie scene with an unforgettable soundtrack and cast. These lovable dolls were back in the spotlight in 2020 with Trolls World Tour and coming back for more in 2023 with their anticipated third movie - Trolls Band Together - set to release in November!
LEGO
Today I learned that LEGOS had produced its first brick in 1949. That means that this famous toy is almost 75 years old! We all have memories of the first thing we built orrrrr the first time we stepped on one. But the real good memories come with the release of The LEGO Movie in 2014 with stars like Chris Pratt and Will Farrell paving the way for saving the world. And we can’t forget about the sequel, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part. The LEGO Movie 3 is in development and we hope to see these extraordinary figures back on the big screen soon!
Dungeons & Dragons
Rounding out the list of childhood toys taking a ride into the Hollywood spotlight is no other than Dungeons & Dragons. This fantasy role-playing game was introduced to the world in 1974 and has been evolving ever since. In March 2023, Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, and Regé-Jean Page banded on a quest to retrieve a lost relic in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. This was one of my favorite movies of this year and if you aren’t convinced yet, Hugh Grant and Sophia Lills star in this action comedy too!
